Interview with Senator Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim

Biography:

Senator Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim is an eminent Malaysian renowned for his integrity. A member of the Kedah royal household, a relative of Malaya’s Father of Independence Tunku Abdul Rahman, and a talented corporate and NGO leader, Tunku Aziz is extremely highly regarded in Malaysia and overseas. He began his business career with Guthrie Corporation Ltd and later became an advisor to Bank Negara. Later he returned to the private sector by joining Dunlop Malaysian Industries before being appointed a Sime Darby Group director.

He left Malaysia in 1985 to take up a directorship at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London before returning to Malaysia in 1992 following his retirement.

Tunku Aziz was the co-founder President of the Kuala Lumpur Society for Transparency and Integrity, the Malaysian Chapter of Transparency International. He was also vice president of Transparency International. He was appointed by then United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan as the Special Adviser on the Establishment of the Ethics Office in the UN.

On 23rd August 2008, Tunku Aziz joined the DAP (Democratic Action Party) and was appointed the party’s vice-chairman. On 31st May 2009, Tunku Aziz was sworn in as Senator for Penang in the Malaysian Senate. A true non-racist, Tunku Aziz passionately battles against decades of entrenched and institutionalised sectarianism and segregation, and is actively involved in trying to de-racialise Malaysian politics. Today, Tunku Aziz is a senior political leader, blogger and social activist who maintains a keen interest in justice and integrity.
