New Media and the Informed Citizen

A comparative study of new media, politics and citizenship

Sponsored by:

Project Overview

“New Media and the Informed Citizen” is a comparative study of the use of new media and its impact on the political system in Malaysia and Australia. There are three parts to the project - a research paper, a website, and an international symposium which was held in Brisbane in July. The project is funded by the Australia-Malaysia Institute, a unit of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia and is being undertaken by a team from Paradigm Infinitum, an Australian based consultancy and training organisation.

In undertaking this project, the project team will travel to Malaysia to interview politicians, policy makers, government officials, journalists and bloggers to gain their views on how new media has affected the democratic process in Malaysia.

The project deliverables are scheduled as follows:

The Australia-Malaysia Institute

The Australia-Malaysia Institute (AMI) is an institution run by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The AMI was established in 2005 and seeks to promote Australia's interests in Malaysia. The AMI funds projects such as "New Media and the Informed Citizen" to increase mutual understanding between Australians and Malaysians on both a person-to-person basis and institutional basis. Media is currently a priority area for the AMI, and projects such as this will help to encourage professional links between Australians and Malaysians in the media industry.
